Kidney stones are little deposits formed in the ureter and bladder. These crystal deposits obstruct the flow of body toxins. People who have family history of kidney stones are more likely to develop them. Passing of these stones can be incredibly painful at times.
According to Ayurveda, four types of stones are categorized depending upon its colour, cause and symptoms, they are Vathashmari, Pittashmari, kaphashmari and Shukrashmari.
DIET TO BE AVOIDED FOR PREVENTION OF KIDNEY STONE FORMATION
- Limit food with high oxalate level
A huge oxalate intake may increase oxalate excretion in urine and may tend to form calcium oxalate crystals. Many plants contain oxalates so its hard to avoid it completely , but try to limit its consumption. Food like Almonds, cashews, spinach, beet, shredded wheat cereals, French fries, rashberries, stevia sweetners, sweet potatoes are found to be rich in oxalates. Too much of vit c can also produce oxalates. So avoid these food items.
- Cut back on salt
A diet high in salt is linked to an increased risk of kidney stones. A high intake of sodium may increase calcium excretion through urine.
- Limit the intake of sugary drinks
Drinks that are flavoured with sugar especially high fructose corn syrup can lead to stone formation. So sugary drinks has to be avoided.
- Eat less animal protein
A high intake of animal protein may increase calcium excretion. A diet rich in meat , fish and dairy products should be minimized by people who are prone to kidney stone formation.
HOME REMEDIES AND HERBS TO PREVENT AND CURE KIDNEY STONES
- WHEAT GRASS JUICE
Wheat grass increases urine flow to pass the stones. It also contains vital nutrients that helps to clean the kidneys. You can take 2 to 4 ounces of wheat grass juice everyday.
- POMEGRANATE JUICE
Pomegranate juice has been used since long to improve overall kidney function. It flushes the stones and lowers the acidity level of urine thereby lowering the risk for future kidney stones.
- CELERY JUICE
Celery juice clear away toxins that contribute to kidney stone formation. It also increases urine output thereby help to flush out stones. Blend one or more celery stalks with water and consume it everyday.
- BASIL JUICE
Basil leaves contain acetic acid that mainly helps to break down kidney stones. The antioxidants element in basil juice help to maintain kidney health. Use fresh basil leaves and make decoction or tea and consume it every day.
- LEMON JUICE
Lemons contain citrates which help to prevent calcium stone formation. Citrates also help to break bigger stones to smaller ones, so that they can be easily flushed out through urine.
Stay hydrated as much as possible. It is the key rule to prevent kidney stone formation. Increasing water intake can speed up the process of flushing out of stones. Go for 12 glasses of water when you want to flush out stones. Once the stone passes you can continue to drink 8 glasses of water.
- PASHAN BHED
As the name suggests Pashan bhed is a stone breaking herb. Its antilithic property helps to remove kidney and urinary tract stones. You can use Pashan bhed powderand make decoction with water. Its mutral (diuretic) property helps to increase urine production and remove kidney stones.
As per classical literature of Ayurveda, gokshura is useful in management of urinary disorders. It has diuretic , lithotriptic, and anti-inflammatory action, which helps to reduce the size of formed stones and flushes them out. You can consume the powder of gokshura and make decoction with water and consume.
