Hepatitis C

Hepatitis means inflammation of the liver. Many illnesses and conditions can cause inflammation of the liver, for example, drugs, alcohol, chemicals, autoimmune diseases and viral infections. There are several hepatitis viruses; they have been named types A, B, C, D, E and G. The most common hepatitis viruses are types A, B, and C.

Hepatitis C (HCV)

Hepatitis C is a contagious, viral liver disease. This disease spreads by blood-to-blood contact, and primarily by the use of injectable. Most people with hepatitis C do not realize that they have it. Acute HCV can cause abdominal discomfort, nausea, fatigue, and fever. Chronic HCV can lead to more severe scarring of the liver and liver cancers.

Symptoms:

Chronic hepatitis C is usually a “silent” infection for many years, until the virus damages the liver enough to cause the signs and symptoms of liver disease.

Signs and symptoms include:

  • Bleeding easily
  • Bruising easily
  • Fatigue
  • Poor appetite
  • Yellow discoloration of the skin and eyes (jaundice)
  • Dark-colored urine
  • Itchy skin
  • Fluid buildup in your abdomen (ascites)
  • Swelling in your legs
  • Weight loss
  • Confusion, drowsiness and slurred speech (hepatic encephalopathy)
