What should I do when I see blood in my stool?

We have seen many people especially women , when the pass blood in stools, they got terrified. Some don’t disclose to their close family members Due to shyness.. Even if they disclose to family or friends, they are not able to guide what to do and whom to approach.

Bleeding in stools is due to many reasons like haemorrhoids, Ulcerative colitis, Anal fissure or colon cancer.

Unfortunately people first think of that bleeding in stool is due to piles, so they start looking after treatment of piles.

Here are few important things to understand that there are many diseases. In each disease bleeding and associated symptoms are different. Here you can understand about common symptoms.

In Piles, patient complains of constipation (passing hard stool followed by fresh bleeding). In this case bleeding does not comes daily .sometimes piles mass comes out of rectum while passing stools and goes back inside after passing stools.

In Anal fissure, bleeding is in streaks (along with stool) . Patient feels pain and burning after passing stool due to fissure. And afraid to go to toilet due to pain and burning. Patient feels a mass around anus which always remains outside.

In Ulcerative Colitis or IBD (Inflammatory Bowel Disease) blood and mucus is mixed in stools. Stools are loose sometimes watery. And frequency if increased from 2or 3 to 15 or 20 times. In IBD or Ulcerative Colitis patient is unable to hold the stools. He or she has to rush to toilet immediately to clear the bowel. Patients feels loss of energy and loose weight. In Ulcerative Colitis or IBD , inflammation is upto inner lining of colon, and may affect lower part colon or left colon or complete large intestine can be inflammed or ulcerated which is called PANCOLITIS. People with UC have an increased risk of colon cancer when the entire colon is affected for a long period of time. The risk of colon cancer also rises after having UC for 8 to 10 years and continues to increase over time. This doesn’t mean that UC people will get Colon cancer. Putting UC in remission with successful treatment may lower the risk of colon cancer

In Crohn’s Disease , patients rarely passes blood in stools. Constipation and pain in abdomen are main symptoms. In this Crohn’s mouth to rectum any part can be inflamed . Here inflammation can spread through the whole wall of Gut

In Colon Cancer, rectal bleeding with changed bowl habits and marked loss of weight is there.
If you see any type of these symptoms, you should not shy or should hide it. First tell to your close family member and should visit nearest Gastroenterologist ( expert of abdomen and colon disease). He will take your history and may advise sigmoidoscopy or colonoscopy to view the inner health of your colon. Colonoscopy is an outpatient procedure during which your large bowel (colon and rectum) is examined from the inside.
